After reading the letter published on Thursday’s Opinion page, “Why I’m voting for voter ID referendum,” I had to write and correct the misdirection of that letter. The referendum is not really a voter ID law, it is what I consider a voter suppression referendum. Read the full content of it and you will see that it will hurt voter turnout, hurt seniors, and handicap the disabled.
The referendum will eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of ballot drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our election.
Read the full content and you will see the voter ID portion is, I believe, just a smokescreen to suppress voter turnout.
