A Limestone man died Tuesday evening from injuries suffered in a crash in Fort Fairfield that also killed his wife, Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings said.
Pierre Gagne, 72, and Carrie Smith-Gagne, 60, who was driving, were traveling north in a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer on Route 1A near the Limestone town line around 10 a.m. Tuesday when the driver of a 2012 Chevy Impala heading south crossed the center line and struck their vehicle.
Smith-Gagne died at the scene. Gagne was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, where he died Tuesday evening. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Limestone residents Amber Turcotte, 25, and Casey Clayton, 37, were in the Impala. Cummings did not specify who was driving. Both were ejected from the vehicle in the crash. Turcotte was taken to A.R. Gould Hospital in Presque Isle and Clayton to Cary Medical Center, both with life-threatening injuries.
Cummings said the collision occurred when the driver of the Impala drove into the dirt shoulder and overcorrected when returning to the road, crossing into the northbound lane.
Fort Fairfield Police Sgt. Jesse Cormier is investigating the crash.
Police closed the area around 854 Limestone Road until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to work the scene.
Fort Fairfield Fire and Rescue, Presque Isle Fire and Rescue, Caribou Fire and Ambulance, a Presque Isle Police Department crash reconstructionist, U.S. Border Patrol and Maine State Police all assisted the Fort Fairfield police.
