Versant Power line workers rescued an osprey on Friday.
The bird was seen hanging upside down from a power line cable in Lamoine, and a concerned customer reported the raptor.
Line workers were able to free the bird, using a long pole to nudge the bird. The animal flew away and did not appear to be injured.
Ospreys are a common sight in Lamoine, especially around power lines, as they tend to nest on the tall structures. Versant Power built a platform in consultation with environmental specialists, including those from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, to keep the ospreys from nesting near the power lines.
The platform sits on a pole that is significantly taller than the roadside power lines in an effort to discourage osprey from interacting with and getting injured by the cables.
If you see an injured or distressed animal — that is not hanging from a power line — it is recommended to contact your local game warden by contacting the Maine Warden Service at 1-800-452-4664, or the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at 207-287-8000.
