Two people were injured in a crash in Veazie on Interstate 95 on Wednesday morning that snarled traffic for hours.
At around 7:30 a.m., a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck had been southbound in the passing lane of I-95 near mile marker 189 when the hood apparently unlatched and flew up, blocking the view of driver 21-year-old Colby Tear, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
Tear reacted and braked the vehicle quickly, while attempting to pull to the median. As he was attempting to pull over, a 2019 Toyota Rav4 was unable to stop before crashing into the back of Tear’s truck.
As the Rav4 was colliding with Tear’s vehicle, an oncoming 2011 Subaru Forester veered to try to avoid the crash, leaving the right hand side of the road and coming to a stop in the woods.
The Toyota driver was transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. The Subaru driver was transported as well, treated for minor injuries and released, Moss said.
Tear was not injured in the multi-vehicle crash.
The crash shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 between the Kelley Road exit at mile marker 191 and the Hogan Road exit at mile marker 187 for around two hours on Wednesday morning.
