The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are so close to getting Conrad’s perspective, which almost makes up for having to first watch Belly and Jeremiah mock him in the show’s newest episode.

Let’s rewind to the start of the Wednesday, July 30, episode, which showed Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) dealing with the aftermath of their engagement. Belly took a job to pay for her wedding while living in a house with her mom, Laurel (Jackie Chung), who took every chance she could get to remind her daughter that getting married so young was a big mistake.

Jeremiah had a similar situation after scoring an internship at his dad’s company. It seemed like things couldn’t get any worse — until Belly’s 21st birthday came around. On her special day, Belly wanted to go dress shopping with Laurel, but she ended up going with Taylor (Rain Spencer) and her mom, Lucinda, after Laurel said no.

Jeremiah then tried to step in, making a big speech to Laurel about how she always wanted him to be her son-in-law. Long story short, Belly and Laurel had a fight that led to Belly going to stay at the beach house in Cousins.

Biggest Differences Between ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ TV Series and Books

Fans of Jenny Han‘s book We’ll Always Have Summer, the inspiration for the show’s third season, know that this is when Conrad (Christopher Briney) entered the picture again. After losing his clinic job and seeing the love of his life announce an engagement to his brother, Conrad chose to lay low at the beach house — until Belly and Jeremiah showed up.

Now, Conrad was cornered by Jeremiah about being his best man after Steven (Sean Kaufman) already said yes, but the eldest Fisher brother admitted that he couldn’t do it because he found their decision to get married so young “a little ridiculous.” Cue the mocking from Belly and Jeremiah’s end as they questioned why yet another person didn’t support their wedding.

Belly also decided to abandon her plans to study abroad in Paris, and Jeremiah revealed he never wanted her to go anyway. Despite their determination to go through with the nuptials, Belly started crying as she remembered happier moments with her mom before they were in a fight. Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” then started to play as Conrad (who had already booked a return flight home) secretly saw Belly’s breakdown.

Flash forward an hour or so, and Conrad agreed to be his brother’s best man. He also had a sweet moment with Belly where he surprised her with a dessert he baked for his birthday. And as Billie Eilish‘s “Halley’s Comet” started to play — with the lyrics “Silly me to fall in love with you” — the narration’s point of view switched.

“What have I done?” Conrad asked in a voiceover as the episode faded to black. While Prime Video viewers will have to wait until next week to find out what Conrad meant, many likely know that the story is about to pick up with the eldest Fisher getting his time to shine again.

“It’s cool to steal the voiceover spot for a little while,” Briney, 27, said in a May interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s fun to have exactly what the subtext is. It makes the scene easier, because that’s half the work.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty airs on Prime Video Wednesdays.
