Fans waiting for a spinoff of The Summer I Turned Pretty are in for a disappointing update.

Vernon Sanders, who is the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, appeared to walk back his past comments about expanding Jenny Han‘s fictional universe, telling Deadline on Monday, July 28, “That was probably wishful thinking for me at the time, and Jenny has stayed really focused to getting these seasons right.”

The executive noted that he hoped to continue to collaborate with Han on other projects.

“We’re pursuing new and different things with Jenny right now,” he noted. “She’s presented some other things that are related to this.”

‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Spinoffs We Want: Belly, Conrad Pre-Wedding and More

Sanders concluded, “So once the full season is launched, we’ll get into conversations, and we’ll ask her to pick from the many things that she’s surfaced. But we’ve moved away from those conversations.”

The update comes after Sanders previously teased more shows related to The Summer I Turned Pretty.

“I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. So we’re thrilled about a season 3, and she’s got a vision for more,” Sanders told Deadline in September 2023. “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”

Sanders went on to praise Han’s vision at the time.

What ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Cast Teased About Love Triangle Outcome

“We take pride in our relationships with authors. We work with so many, and I think the key here is leaning into great stories that are really just focused on characters and relationships. This show is all about Jenny’s vision and the tight team that she has,” he continued. “As we think about this audience, I think we will continue to look for those authored stories. You don’t need a ton of special effects. It’s not about bells and whistles, it’s just about characters and universal storytelling. I have to give incredible kudos to the cast … they’ve been brilliant in their portrayals and wonderful partners as well.”

Before bringing her talents to Prime Video, Han adapted her To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before book series with three Netflix films. The hit onscreen trilogy, which starred Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, inspired the streaming platform to expand the universe with spinoff series XO, Kitty, which wrapped production on season 3 earlier this month.

Meanwhile, The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered in 2021 and is focused on a love triangle between Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). The current season is slated to be the show’s last as Belly finally makes a decision between Conrad and Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty airs on Prime Video Wednesdays.
