If you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend, Netflix is always a reliable source of great movies.

But sometimes you have to do a little digging to uncover the underrated gems that you may not have seen before.

Watch With Us does that digging for you! This weekend we’re recommending three underrated movies — two comedies and a drama.

Featuring actors like Lily James, Steve Martin and Nicholas Braun, they don’t always get the love they deserve — that’s why you should check out these underrated Netflix movies.

‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’ (2018)

This period drama, based on the bestselling novel of the same name, stars Lily James as writer Juliet Ashton, who ventures to the recently liberated British island of Guernsey shortly after the end of World War II. (Guernsey was occupied by German forces during the war.)

Juliet’s plan is to write about the aforementioned society, which was formed to cover up for a group of friends breaking curfew one night during the occupation. Eventually, however, the group became a real book club that allowed Guernsey citizens to keep hope alive in unimaginable circumstances. The movie, which also stars Michiel Huisman, Glen Powell and Jessica Brown Findlay, is a moving testament to the power of stories in dark times.

‘Saturday Night’ (2024)

After 50 years, it’s hard to imagine that Saturday Night Live was ever not a part of American culture. But in fact, it was once an avant-garde program that everyone was certain would fail. The comedic drama Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, follows a young Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) in the 90 minutes before the first episode’s premiere. Lorne’s idea seems doomed — the set’s not built, the scripts are being rewritten, the cast is refusing to sign their contracts and the network is rooting against him. But Lorne’s vision is so powerful that he keeps pushing through — ultimately changing comedy forever.

Much like the original SNL, Saturday Night’s cast is made up mostly of talented newcomers, but a few familiar faces include Rachel Sennot as SNL producer Rosie Shuster, Lamorne Morris as comedian Garrett Morris (no relation) and Nicholas Braun as both Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson.

‘The Jerk’ (1979)

This Steve Martin movie is a kooky and hilarious comedy that’s a perfect example of his style. Martin plays Navin Johnson, an incredibly stupid white man who was adopted and raised by black sharecroppers in Mississippi. When he learns the truth of his origins — revealed to him when he asks his father why he has no rhythm — he journeys across America to find his identity. Along the way, he meets and falls in love with Marie (Bernadette Peters).

What’s New on Netflix in July 2025

Navin’s many misadventures allow Martin ample opportunity for his trademark physical comedy. It’s a remarkably silly movie that revels in its own dumbness.
