Jack Webb has become a local fixture on the eastern Maine sports scene.
And the former ABC Channel 7-Fox 22 (WVII/WFVX) sports reporter/co-anchor has been promoted to the role of sports director/co-anchor for the station, replacing Tyler Krusz.
“I’m very excited. I’m really fired up,” said the 25-year-old Webb, who pointed out that Krusz left to become the director of communications for the Ellsworth school department.
The 6-foot-4 Webb is an Arundel native who was an all-conference offensive lineman at Saco’s Thornton Academy before playing for Sacred Heart (Connecticut) and the University of Maine.
Webb was hired as a co-anchor/sports reporter by Krusz a year ago and had an internship under Krusz and former sports director Dave Peck during the summer of 2022.
He suffered a career-ending knee injury during the fall of 2022 at UMaine and eventually became a student assistant who would signal in plays from the sideline to the offensive line.
“I was also the unofficial director of player morale,” Webb quipped.
He wound up working for the University of Maine as the sideline reporter for UMaine men’s and women’s basketball and hockey home games during the 2023-24 season.
“I always wanted to do this and get my start here. It feels really good to be in this position,” Webb said, noting that he learned a lot from Peck and Krusz during his internship.
“They were so good to me. They saw how hungry I was and let me take the internship as far as I could,” Webb said.
He said his gig as a sideline reporter for UMaine was also valuable.
“I got some really good reps. It got my foot in the door for this job,” he said.
Webb said he really enjoys telling stories and getting out into the community and building relationships with athletes, coaches and fans.
He used to interview athletes at Thornton Academy when he was a student there for a show called Trojan Talk with Jackie Moon.
“That got me in touch with Dave Eid and Travis Lee, two guys I’ve always admired and I always wanted to be,” said Webb referring to the respective sports directors at WGME and WMTW in Portland.
Webb loved his time at UMaine and thoroughly enjoys covering the Black Bears, and hopes to do some sideline reporting for the school on weekends since his sports director job goes from Monday through Friday.
He also called high school sports in Maine “awesome.”
Webb played basketball and lacrosse at Thornton Academy in addition to football.
“I am passionate about sports and story telling,” Webb said.
He feels “very lucky” to be able to stay in the state of Maine for this job.
“To be able to stay home and do the things I’m doing right now is a dream come true,” said Webb, who is now looking to hire a reporter/anchor to take his old job.
