A district court judge set a $5,000 bail with multiple additional conditions for the man who held a seven-hour standoff with police while perched on the roof of a Bangor home.
Stephen Nason, 39, of Bangor faces two federal charges, a Class C felony aggravated criminal mischief and a Class E felony criminal trespass.
He appeared before District Court Judge Ann Murray at the Penobscot Judicial Center Friday afternoon.
Nason was arrested on Wednesday after refusing to come down from the roof of a 14th Street house from 4 a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. During the standoff, Nason leaped into a Bangor Fire Department bucket lift when firefighters attempted to give him water. Nason took an axe from the bucket and caused damage to the roof.
Nason was charged with aggravated criminal mischief because the amount of damage he caused to the roof exceeded $2,000, Bangor police Sgt. Jason McAmbley said.
Under his bail conditions, he will not be allowed to use or possess dangerous weapons, drugs or alcohol. He was also ordered to not return to 14th Street.
Nason’s lawyer asked for a mental examination to evaluate his competency to proceed in court.
Nason has a history of creating standoffs with local police dating to 2011.
