BANGOR – Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center successfully completed a rigorous three-year compliance inspection from the Surgical Review Corporation, resulting in four renewed safety accreditations.
For the second time since 2023, hernia and robotic surgical teams met internationally recognized standards for surgical quality and safety, achieving a Center of Excellence designation in Hernia Surgery and Robotic Surgery.
Two surgeons at Northern Light Surgical Specialists, Daniel Hetherman, MD, and Matthew Sharbaugh, DO, also earned a Surgeon of Excellence designation in both robotic surgery and hernia surgery.
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is the only facility in Maine to achieve these accreditations, setting the highest standard of excellence in patient care and safety.

To achieve the Center of Excellence accreditations, SRC reviews robotic and hernia surgery volumes and patient outcomes, looking at surgical complications before and after discharge, readmissions and reoperations. SRC surveyors tour surgical and critical care areas and interview staff, ensuring that all surgical teams embrace best practices and standardized operating procedures.
