Fans of The Vampire Diaries would love nothing more than a revival or a reunion — but what is the major obstacle preventing the show from coming back?

In Us Weekly‘s exclusive clip from the Tuesday, June 24, episode of Tommy DiDario‘s “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast, Candice King was asked about the possibility of a reunion.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened,” she noted. “No matter what, this is an industry that sees something that has worked and has been successful so it wants it to stay in the zeitgeist or remake it. By any means, I don’t think that would have anything to do with us as a cast. but who knows?”

King, 38, pointed out one major issue, adding, “I have no idea. But what I do know is there are a lot of characters who are so dead — like, very dead — so that would be tough. Everyone came back at one point and was alive. I do like when a story has an ending.”

Projects That Reunited ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Cast, Crew After the Show Ended

She continued: “But I don’t know what will happen with that trilogy of shows. It was really this gift that kept on giving. I appreciate that [my character] Caroline Forbes made it to the very end. But who knows? Anything can happen. Never say never.”

The CW series, which ran from 2009 to 2017, introduced viewers to the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. At the center of the drama was Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) love triangle with Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), but fans quickly got invested in the other characters and relationships on the show.

After season 2 introduced the Mikaelson family, The Vampire Diaries expanded with its first spinoff, The Originals, which ran from 2013 to 2018 and focused on Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and his family after their move to the French Quarter of New Orleans. In the first season, Klaus and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) welcomed daughter Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) after previously engaging in a one-night stand.

Hope subsequently spearheaded the second spinoff, titled Legacies. Following The Originals’ series finale, Legacies premiered on The CW. The third series centered around Hope during her time at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.

Since the franchise wrapped up in 2022, various cast members from the show have reunited with executive producers and writers on new projects.

‘Vampire Diaries’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

The CW’s Containment reunited executive producer Julie Plec with Chris Wood, who played Kai on The Vampire Diaries. Meanwhile, Tell Me a Story offered executive producer Kevin Williamson a chance to work with Wesley, 42, and Danielle Campbell, who previously played Davina on The Originals. Williamson and Campbell, 30, worked together again on Netflix’s The Waterfront.

There was also Roswell, New Mexico, which starred several familiar faces, including Nathan Parsons, Michael Trevino, Kayla Ewell, Riley Voelkel and Steven Krueger.

King, meanwhile, reunited with Plec and executive producer Carina Adly Mackenzie on We Were Liars.

The Vampire Diaries is currently streaming on Peacock and HBO Max.
