The warmest weather of the season so far is expected to push into Maine from Monday into Tuesday, bringing with it extreme heat warnings, particularly in central and inland areas.
The heat index — or “feels-like” temperature — is forecast to reach around 90 degrees on Monday and climb as high as 106 degrees in some areas Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service’s Caribou office.
Southern Piscataquis, interior Hancock, and central and southern Penobscot counties are expected to bear the brunt of the heat and humidity.
“This will lead to very dangerous conditions, bringing serious heat-related illnesses consisting of muscle cramps and nausea,” said the weather service in a statement.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying out of the sun and in air-conditioned spaces, and rescheduling any outdoor activities. They also urge people not to leave pets or children in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in just a few minutes.
