The body of a Milbridge man who had been missing since May 18 was recovered Saturday morning by Maine Marine Patrol officers.
A fisherman discovered the body of Alton Wallace, 51, near the high-water line on the western shore of Foster Island in Narraguagus Bay and reported it to authorities. Marine Patrol officers recovered the body around 11 a.m., according to a news release.
Wallace was identified by a driver’s license found in his pocket.
He had been missing since failing to return from harvesting clams, prompting a widespread search involving local fishermen, community members, the U.S. Coast Guard, Maine Warden Service, Maine Forest Service, and the Maine Underwater Recovery Team.
His cellphone last pinged near Fickett Point at the mouth of the Narraguagus River. Foster Island, where he was found, is about a mile east of that location.
His body has been taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy.
