PORTLAND — Through the sport of squash, an organization in Portland is eliminating barriers for more than 300 families from over 30 countries.
“Squash is the hook,” said Barrett Takesian, executive director of Portland Community Squash. “But our programs provide so much more.”
Located on Noyes Street, PCS has united over 700 members of all ages and backgrounds since its inception in 2017. In addition, an acclaimed after-school program offers squash, along with academic assistance and community building, to nearly 200 young people.
“We provide academic support, wellness programs, character development, social events and more,” said Takesian. “We have a van at every school for pick up and drive the students back home at the end of the day. Some students spend 25 hours per week here from elementary school through high school graduation.”
“My family and I have been a part of PCS for six years,” said a tenth grader from Portland. “I love squash, but most of all, the community of friendships I have here.”
Recently, Norway Savings Bank delivered a $10,000 check to the organization as part of a multiyear commitment, enabling families with financial difficulties to help their children participate in this beneficial program.
“Hundreds and hundreds of local youth are being changed for the better thanks to PCS. They are learning the skills they need to thrive and gaining an appreciation for the beauty of being part of a community,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of NSB. “They focus on walking with young people as they move through school and are able to build a relationship with the entire family. The involvement of youth and their families in emphasizing diversity, inclusion, and cohesion is generating hope far beyond the courts on Noyes Street. It’s making a real difference, and we’re thrilled to be able to contribute.”
