A Florida man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly flying to Boston and driving to Standish to scam a Mainer out of $9,500, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The hoax falls under the category known as “Grandparent Scams” wherein scammers pretend to be the victim’s grandchild to convince them to transfer money.
The suspect in this case, Julius Bigboro of Miami, allegedly posed as the Standish resident’s grandson and claimed that he needed money because he’d been arrested by the Scarborough Police Department.
Bigboro, 48, was arrested after his victim handed over $9,500 cash. His first court appearance was scheduled for Friday in Portland.
