I’m someone who depends on Maine’s developmental services to live independently. I am a self advocate and the vice chair of the board of Speaking Up For Us, a statewide self-advocacy network for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
I rely on support staff to help me with things like cleaning and getting out into the community for things like grocery shopping and errands. These services help me live a full, independent life. Others may need even more help, like with bathing, dressing, or getting around. We all have different support needs, but we all rely on the same system to live safely and with dignity.
That’s why I’m asking lawmakers to make sure these services are fully funded — and that the people who provide them are paid fairly for the important work they do. Without them, people like me could lose our independence. These workers deserve better pay and cost-of-living increases, not more cuts or empty promises.
This letter isn’t just for me — it’s for all the adults living with developmental and intellectual disabilities who can’t share their voice. Please remember us, and please value the people who support us every day.
