Almost a month after it was canceled, more than $1 million in Environmental Protection Agency funding for the University of Maine is back.
The $1.4 million grant was being used to study how “forever chemicals” — or poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS — interact with plants, soil and food.
When the agency canceled it, the EPA said PFAS research was no longer a priority.
However, UMaine said that the $1.4 million grant was restored last week, and its work will continue.
As of June 9, the University of Maine System said it has had 16 awards restored that the Trump administration had previously terminated, mostly at UMaine.
