The Maine high school state championships for outdoor track are being delayed due to another round of bad weather forecasted for this weekend.

A rainy spring had already been tormenting high school athletic directors and athletes alike as they tried to finish out their regular season schedules. And now the state outtrack track championships have fallen victim to the same pattern of washed out weekends, with thunderstorms and rain in the forecast for Friday into Saturday.

The Class A, B and C state meets slated for Saturday have been moved to Tuesday, according to the Maine Principals’ Association. More information about locations and other meet details are still to come.

“Due to the high likelihood of thunderstorms and rain throughout the day on Saturday, June 7, the Class A, B, and C Outdoor Track Championships have been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 10,” said a Friday afternoon statement from the MPA, which oversees interscholastic sports across the state. “The MPA is currently working to secure venues and finalize details. Once arrangements are confirmed, additional information will be shared.”

The Class A meet was supposed to be held at the Brewer Community School, the Class B meet was slated to be held at Freeport High School, and the Class C meet was scheduled at Messalonskee High School in Oakland.

The postponement of these meets marks yet another scheduling challenge in a spring season already full of logistical headaches. The relentless string of weekend rain storms, combined with other factors like referee and umpire availability, have made for a particularly hectic season of scheduling and rescheduling high school sporting events.

“I’ve been doing this for 37 years, and this is probably the roughest one I’ve seen in all those years of doing it,” longtime Mount Desert Island High School Athletic Director Bunky Dow told the Bangor Daily News in late May.
