Chris Martin gave Dakota Johnson’s new movie, Materialists, a shout-out days before their split.
“Thank you so much everybody. Be kind to yourself, be kind to each other. Don’t forget to go see Materialists,” Martin, 48, said to the crowd at Coldplay’s concert in Stanford, California per fan footage shared via social media on Sunday, June 1. “We love you! We’ll see you next time.”
Johnson, 35, stars in Materialists alongside Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The romcom is scheduled to be released on Friday, June 13.
Martin’s on-stage gesture came days before news broke of him and Johnson broke up after nearly eight years together. People reported on Wednesday, June 4, that the pair had called off their engagement. Us Weekly reached out to Martin and Johnson for comment at the time.
Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson Reportedly Split Again After 8 Years
After news broke of their split, Johnson was spotted walking around New York City without her engagement ring.
Prior to their break-up, Martin and Johnson faced speculation about the status of their relationship. Johnson supported Martin during Coldplay’s summer 2024 tour. However, the actress raised eyebrows when she was spotted without her engagement ring while out and about in Los Angeles.
Johnson’s rep denied the rumors in an August 2024 statement to Us.
“The reports are not true. They are happily together,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier this year, things seemed like smooth sailing for the twosome. At the start of the year, Martin and Johnson were photographed holding hands in India. During their getaway, they were filmed participating in a religious ceremony at Mumbai’s Hindu House of Prayer Babulnath Temple.
Last month, Johnson and Martin had a rare public outing in Malibu.
Us confirmed Martin and Johnson began dating in December 2017 following the musician’s divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow. (Martin and Paltrow’s divorce was finalized in July 2016. The exes share two children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19.)

Two years later, Johnson and Martin broke up. However, the duo ultimately rekindled their relationship after one month apart. A source told Us in August 2019 that Paltrow played a part in reuniting the couple.
“Gwyneth is the one who pushed them to do it,” a source said.
Us confirmed in March 2024 that Martin and Johnson were engaged.
“They absolutely plan on having Apple and Moses there, and they wouldn’t feel complete without inviting Gwyneth too,” a source said. “Dakota and Gwyneth have grown very close over the years and they consider themselves family at this point. One of the most important things to Chris is how beautifully Dakota fits into the lives of him and his children.”
