FORT KENT, Maine — A Fort Kent Mills man is now barred from entering any nursing home after being convicted of a sexual offense last month.
Aurele Laferriere, 81, was charged with three counts of unlawful sexual touching on Sept. 17, 2024, according to court records.
Records did not indicate if the crime occurred at a nursing home or whether he was employed at a nursing home at the time.
Fort Kent Police Chief Michael DeLena was not immediately available for comment.
A criminal complaint was filed at Fort Kent District Court on Nov. 18, 2024, and Laferriere initially pleaded not guilty on Dec. 2. He pleaded guilty on May 9 to one of the three counts, court records indicated.
He was found guilty of the charge, a class D crime punishable by up to 364 days incarceration and a $2,000 fine. Judge Carrie Linthicum sentenced him to six months in jail, suspended all but two days, after which he will serve a one-year probation.
The other two charges were dismissed.
As part of the special conditions of Lafferiere’s probation, he was ordered not to go to any nursing home except as a resident.
He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample as required by Maine law.
Laferriere must also complete an outpatient psychological and mental health evaluation with counseling and treatment, and pay the Department of Corrections a fee of $10 per month during this probationary period.
