Zach Sugar has been named the new head baseball coach at Husson University after previously serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, the school announced Thursday.
Sugar replaces outgoing head coach Chris Morris, who left the role last week to become the new head coach at the Massachusetts Institute of technology. Sugar has spent seven seasons on Husson’s coaching staff.
“It is an honor to be named the next head baseball coach at Husson University,” Sugar said in a statement. “Husson is a special place with outstanding student-athletes. A huge thank you to my wife, Gabby, and son, Jaxon, for all your love and support. My family and I are beyond excited to continue being part of the Husson community.”
Sugar is a 2017 Husson graduate who played as an infielder for the baseball team during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The Eagles have secured five straight North Atlantic Conference championships and NCAA Division III tournament berths.
“As a former student-athlete and long-time assistant, Zach understands the values of this program,” Associate Athletic Director Janine Gmitter said in a statement. “Coach Sugar has been shaped by the winning tradition built under Coach Morris and is prepared to carry that tradition forward. His leadership, dedication to our student-athletes and understanding of our culture makes this a natural and exciting transition.”
Morris also recognized Sugar when he announced his resignation last week, saying that Husson baseball “would not be where it is today” without Sugar’s “dedication and passion.”
