PORTLAND — MaineHealth announced it has selected Dr. Alex Keuroghlian as the new chief of MaineHealth Behavioral Health and chair of psychiatry at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. As chief, Dr. Keuroghlian will be responsible for the overall clinical operation of behavioral health services across the MaineHealth system; as the department chair he will lead the clinical, teaching and research programs at MHMMC Department of Psychiatry, including residency and fellowship training in general and child psychiatry and the academic affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Keuroghlian previously served as the Michele & Howard J. Kessler Chair and director of the Division of Public and Community Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, associate chief for public and community psychiatry in the MGH Department of Psychiatry and director of the Division of Education and Training at The Fenway Institute. He is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

“Alex brings an exceptional record of leadership in academic and community psychiatry, as well as a deep commitment to advancing behavioral health services,” said Adrian Moran, MD, MBA, FACC, MaineHealth chief medical and transformation officer. “His experience overseeing clinical services for diverse populations, combined with his extensive background in professional development and training, will be invaluable as he steps into this new role at MaineHealth on May 30.”

“I am so excited to have Alex join MaineHealth in this unique dual role,” added MHBH President Kelly Barton, MPH, FACHE. “He has dedicated his career to fostering innovative mental health programs, mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and ensuring equitable access to quality care. His leadership will help us further our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.“

Dr. Keuroghlian graduated with a degree in medicine and a master’s degree in neurosciences from Stanford University School of Medicine and holds a master of public health from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed his residency in psychiatry at MGH/McLean Hospital and a fellowship in community health leadership at MGH.

“We have a special opportunity to integrate superb clinical services, rigorous training, and innovative research across academic and community settings throughout MaineHealth,” shared Dr. Keuroghlian. “I look forward to collaborating with and championing all our amazing teams, whose mission-driven focus will ensure our responsiveness to the behavioral health needs and priorities of our communities.”
