
A 4-year-old who died from a gunshot wound to the head on May 17 in Lewiston was named Jasper Smith, according to Maine State Police, who identified the child on Wednesday and provided some new details about the incident.
Lewiston police received a 911 call at 4:55 a.m. from an apartment at 93 Pierce St. Police, fire and ambulance crews responded, and the child, since identified as Smith, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m., Maine State Police Lt. Aaron Turcotte said in a statement at the time.
On Wednesday, Turcotte said an investigation revealed that a single 9mm handgun was found at the apartment. The gun is registered to Robert McCoy, 36. Additionally, Turcotte said several family members were in the apartment when officers and emergency personnel arrived.
The building at 93 Pierce St. has eight or more apartments and is owned by Pierce 93 LLC, according to city records.
Police have not released any additional details, including whether Smith or McCoy lived at the Lewiston apartment or how Smith was fatally shot.
