Netflix creates so many true crime documentaries, it can be really difficult to pick out the best of the bunch. Between stories of religious cults, deceptive roommates and murderous spouses, there’s so much bone-chilling crime to choose from.

Watch With Us is here to help you wade through the terrifying swamp of true crime by highlighting seven great documentaries about the world’s evils that you can watch on Netflix. Check them out below.

Need more recommendations? Then check out the Best New Movies on Netflix, (HBO) Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime and More, the Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video Right Now,  the Best Movies on Hulu Right Now and the Best Movies on Netflix Right Now.

‘Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey’ (2022)

Journey into the disturbing world of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a sect that gained national attention for its controversial leader, Warren Jeffs. Directed by Rachel Dretzin, the documentary provides a detailed examination of Jeffs’ rise to power and the shocking abuses that occurred under his leadership. Through interviews with former members, law enforcement and archival footage, the series portrays the psychological manipulation, polygamy and patriarchal control prevalent in the FLDS community. Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey not only highlights the personal stories of those who escaped the sect but also unravels the legal and moral dilemmas surrounding the prosecution of its leaders.

Keep Sweet does a remarkable job of sensitively portraying the experience of the abuse survivors, allowing their voices to be heard without exploiting them. It also shines a light on the courage and resilience of the survivors.

‘Worst Roommate Ever’ (2022)

Ever felt fed up with your roommates? Well, you might thank your lucky stars for them after watching this documentary series. Every episode delves into the unsettling stories of seemingly ordinary roommates who turned out to have sinister and sometimes deadly motives.

These roommates’ faux pas go far beyond leaving dishes in the sink all night. Worst Roommate Ever showcases stories of manipulation, deception and, in some instances, violence that led to shocking outcomes. The series combines interviews, dramatizations and archival footage to provide a comprehensive and chilling look at the unnerving world of dangerous cohabitants. Worst Roommate Ever highlights the importance of vigilance and awareness when choosing who you live with. By blending firsthand accounts with structured narrative arcs, it creates a captivating viewing experience.

‘The Staircase’ (2004)

Novelist Michael Peterson seemed like any other concerned husband when he called emergency services to report that his wife Kathleen had fallen down the stairs. But after finding her dead, authorities began to suspect that Michael had bludgeoned his wife to death and pushed her down the stairs to make it look like an accident.

This twist-filled docuseries will have you second-guessing every instinct as you learn more about a deeply complicated marriage. The series was originally released on French streamer Canal+ in 2004, but received an update in 2013 as the case was reopened with new evidence. It won a Peabody award, received widespread critical acclaim and was later adapted into a limited HBO series starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette.

‘Night Stalker: The Hunt For A Serial Killer’ (2021)

If you thought Hollywood was sleazy before watching this true crime documentary, you’ll be glad you weren’t there between 1984 and 1985.

Night Stalker tells the story of Richard Ramirez, a serial killer and sex offender who killed at least 14 people during a series of break-ins in L.A. and San Francisco. The four-part miniseries has a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘American Nightmare’ (2024)

What if what happened to you was so horrible, no one could believe it? Denise Huskins was labeled “the real life Gone Girl” when she was kidnapped from the California home she shared with her boyfriend, then reappeared unharmed.

Police assumed the kidnapping had been staged because the circumstances surrounding it were so bizarre, but this three-part documentary shows the incredible proof that the couple was telling the truth all along.

‘Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter’ (2024)

There’s something deeply heart-wrenching about a mother giving up her daughter for adoption in hopes that she’ll have a better life. But what if that mother learned that her daughter’s life turned out much, much worse than she could ever have imagined?

Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter follows Cathy Terkanian as she tries to discover what happened to her birth daughter, Aundria Bowman, after she went missing in 1989. Cathy’s determination will inspire you, but the conclusion will chill you to the bone.

‘Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer’ (2019)

This Emmy-winning true-crime series shows how the internet can turn anyone into a detective. When pornographic actor Luka Magnotta went viral online for a video in which he suffocated two kittens, Deanna Thompson and John Green were so horrified that they took it upon themselves to track him down.

The efforts of the two amateur sleuths led to a global manhunt as authorities began looking for the murderer based on their information. Meanwhile, Magnotta’s sadistic activities had moved beyond animals to humans. Don’t F**k With Cats is disturbing, yet strangely inspiring in its depiction of how ordinary people can become heroes. It’s a deeply engrossing story with a fascinating and gruesome conclusion.
