A 2-year-old who went missing in the central Maine town of Jay on Wednesday morning was found safe several hours later with the help of a police dog.
The toddler and her mother were outside their home on Tripp Lane, when the mother, who was doing chores, noticed that the child was gone, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said.
After searching the immediate area and coming up empty handed, the mother called 911 at about 11 a.m.
Because of the child’s age, officials from multiple agencies, including the Franklin Sheriff’s Office, Jay Police Department, Jay Fire Department, Northstar EMS and Maine Warden Service were sent to help with the search. The search party included 14 game wardens who brought two dogs.
At about 1:15 p.m., a game warden’s dog found the child in thick brush about 300 yards behind the house. The child was healthy and alert, and had only minor scrapes from walking through the woods, Latti said.
