Peregrine (Gwen) Bolduc-Ignasiak is a graduate of Gardiner Area High School and is graduating  from the University of Southern Maine this month with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Kristen Gleason is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Southern Maine. These are their views and do not express those of the University of Maine System or the University of Southern Maine. Gleason is a member of the Maine chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network, which brings together scholars across the country to address public challenges and their policy implications.

Our current presidential administration is systematically attacking policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion   (DEI), and threatening   the rights and dignity of nonbinary and transgender citizens. Meanwhile, at the state level, the Maine Legislature will this week hear a raft of bills that would roll back the rights of trans people in Maine — particularly trans youth. This has now become an urgent issue within our educational institutions in Maine, and we need to be proactive in fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students, particularly those who do not identify with traditional gender roles.

This group can face challenges in school that can significantly impact their well-being and academic success.   Research has shown that students who identify as transgender or nonbinary often face bullying, discrimination and hostility in school settings. This toxic environment can lead to profound psychological distress, dropping academic performance and an increased risk of mental health issues. We believe schools have a responsibility to actively promote understanding and respect to ensure that every student feels valued and accepted for who they are.

Establishing   effective policies and support services is crucial. Schools must have clear, comprehensive anti-bullying policies that specifically address discrimination based on gender identity and expression. These policies should also include protocols for reporting incidents and providing support to victims. Creating a   framework of accountability will ensure that students feel safer in their learning environments, knowing their concerns will be addressed appropriately.

An essential element in creating safe environments for those not fitting traditional gender roles is allowing them to express their identities freely.   Research shows that allowing students to use their chosen names and pronouns is linked to improved mental health outcomes and a sense of belonging. Initiatives like Gay-Straight Alliances are also critical as they provide spaces for LGBTQ+ students and their allies to come together, share experiences and support each other.

However, despite the obvious need for inclusivity, there is still a lack of rigorous research focused on effective strategies for supporting transgender and gender-diverse students. According to   a research review, targeted interventions, such as awareness training for educators and comprehensive policies, can significantly improve experiences and outcomes for these youth. Research has found that addressing sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in school policies leads to greater safety, reduced victimization and increased teacher support.

Providing support systems is also essential to fostering inclusivity. Mental health resources specifically tailored to the needs of transgender and other students who do not fit traditional gender roles can be a lifeline.   A review of this research outlined that access to school support services for mental health is imperative for promoting the well-being of transgender students. These resources should include counseling services, peer support groups and educational programs to foster a more inclusive atmosphere.

This shows that the school environment must evolve to meet the needs of all students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. It is our collective responsibility to implement effective strategies that promote inclusivity, foster understanding and support well-being. Creating a safe and inclusive educational environment is not just a moral imperative; it is a necessary foundation for nurturing well-rounded, successful individuals.

Let us commit to this cause, ensuring that all students can express their true selves without fear while building a brighter future for generations to come. The time for change is now. Together, we can work toward creating safe and inclusive schools for all students. We urge you to get in contact with your local school board to advocate for policy change so that each Maine school can be a provider of safe and inclusive education and resources for all those who need it.
