‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Reveals If [Spoiler] Is Still Alive After Deadly Massacre

The Handmaid’s Tale revealed if a main character is alive — or dead — after a horrifying massacre.

During the Tuesday, May 6, episode of the hit Hulu series, Nick’s (Max Minghella) decision to sell out June’s (Elisabeth Moss) plan resulted in a raid at Jezebel’s. Everyone there — except Janine (Madeline Brewer) — were killed by a shooting squad.

Janine’s fate initially remained unclear when Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) visited the site of the massacre. It was revealed that Commander Bell (Timothy Simons) took her in as a handmaiden, with Us briefly seeing her in the window of his home before she was taken away again.

Meanwhile elsewhere in Gilead, June could no longer ignore Nick’s day job as a commander. They ended on bad terms and it got worse when Janine told Luke (O-T Fagbenle) she was to blame because she was “pining” away for a “Nazi,” which led their plans for a revolution to fall apart.

Luckily Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) arrived just in time to inspire everyone to keep pushing for an assassination of most Gilead commanders. The location in mind was Serena’s (Yvonne Strahovski) upcoming wedding to Rose’s (Carey Cox) father, Commander Wharton (Josh Charles).

The audience got a glimpse at some of the allies June and Moira (Samira Wiley) have in Gilead including newcomer Aunt Phoebe (D’Arcy Carden) and Rita (Amanda Brugel). Serena, meanwhile, was unaware of what was to come but she had other issues — specifically feeling at odds with the rest of the women in Gilead.

Serena was questioned about her life in New Bethlehem. Her attempts to defend the cause — and the idea that handmaidens deserve a purpose after serving their respective families — only further alienated her from everyone but Wharton, who appeared to be on her side.

As June and Moira continue to prepare for the revolution, there are only three more episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. Coshowrunners Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about what is still to come — especially with Janine’s fate.

What to Remember About ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Before the Final Season Starts

“We’ve seen how resilient Janine can be. She has survived so many horrific things over the course of the series,” Tuchman explained last month during the joint interview. “And here’s yet another time when she’s thrust into a situation where we’re really worried about her.”

Tuchman hinted that viewers will check in with Janine again soon.

“She has this indomitable spirit that keeps her going and she adapts to whatever situation we put her in,” he added. “Even though she’s in this terrible household now with the despicable Commander Bell, I wouldn’t give up hope on Janine’s future.”

Tuchman concluded: “She figures out a way to endure and to survive and to move forward. So keep your faith is what I would say.”

New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are released Tuesdays on Hulu.
