It’s been quieter overhead in Bangor the past couple days.
That’s because Bangor International Airport closed its runway Monday for the first of several 55-hour closures in the coming weeks as part of the next phase of a much-needed runway.
The airport said the runway has reached the “end of its useful life.” So last spring, it completed the first phase of the runway’s upgrade.
Now it’s time for the second phase.
That will require closing the runway from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. May 5-7, 12-14 and 19-21, and June 2-4, 9-11 and 16-18, according to Bangor International Airport.
“This project is more than a runway renovation; it’s a promise to our community, passengers, and partners that BGR will continue to soar as a gateway to the world, grounded in safety, innovation, and resilience,” the airport said in a statement.
The runway typically needs to be upgraded every 15 to 20 years.
