
National Football League Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss spent the first seven years of his 14-year NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings and now his son will try to carve out a pro career with the same team.
University of Maine wide receiver Montigo Moss has accepted an invitation to attend the Vikings’ rookie minicamp either on May 2-5 or May 9-12.
Moss had an outstanding senior season this past fall for the Black Bears with a team-high 61 receptions for 722 yards and seven touchdowns. He was chosen to the All-Colonial Athletic Association third team.
He caught at least five passes in eight games and seven or more in three games, including nine catches for 80 yards against Rhode Island and seven for 122 yards against Bryant.
He was sixth in the CAA in receiving touchdowns (7) and receptions per game (5.1) and was ninth in receiving yards.
He also carried the ball once for a 16-yard gain.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Moss averaged 60.17 receiving yards per game and 11.84 yards per catch.
Moss, who made a number of acrobatic and one-handed catches during his time at UMaine, concluded his 46-game Black Bear career with 143 catches for 1,692 yards and 16 touchdowns.
His father was a first round draft pick of the Vikings, 21st overall, out of Marshall University (West Virginia) in 1998. In addition to the Vikings, he also played for the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders, the New England Patriots and the Tennessee Titans.
Elsewhere in the NFL, former UMaine cornerback Kahzir ‘Buggs’ Brown has signed a free agent deal with the Green Bay Packers after spending last season at Florida Atlantic where he was the team’s fifth-leading tackler with 44 in 12 games. He had two interceptions, eight pass breakups, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry.
Brown spent three years at UMaine where he amassed 143 tackles, 17 pass breakups and six interceptions.
In 2023, his final season at UMaine, the Trenton, New Jersey native became one of the few UMaine defensive backs to ever lead the team in tackles as he finished with 61. He also led the team in solo tackles with 30. He was the team leader in solo tackles in 2022 with 34 and he had 59 overall, which was third-most.
