President Donald Trump claims his tariffs will promote domestic manufacturing and help American workers. But, I believe all he is doing is creating chaos, driving up prices for working families, and creating instability that will make businesses want to invest less, not more, in hiring and production due to economic uncertainty.
If Trump were serious about promoting good American jobs and boosting wages for working people, he’d support the rights of every worker to join and form a union. Workers in unions earn 11.2 percent more than their non-union counterparts, according to the AFL-CIO, and are more likely to have healthcare and a decent retirement plan. Union workers build high-quality American products and help keep industries vibrant and based here at home.
Consumers can also do their part to support America’s workers and the industries that produce goods and products by checking for the union label. From vehicles and washing machines to hot dogs and candy, there is often a union choice consumers can make. And that choice promotes good American jobs.
So instead of costly and chaotic trade wars that weaken the economy and our standing in the world, let’s increase good union jobs and put more money into workers’ pockets that they can then invest in our communities. That’s a win for workers, a win for American industries, and a win for our communities.
