Harmony Hall is one of Hampden’s oldest buildings and is home to a Revere forge bell — one of only 134 left in America. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 18 we’re hosting a potluck dessert. The program includes a showing of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride” and a reading of the Town of Hampden’s recent Resolution. Around 7:30 p.m., local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will hang two lanterns in the steeple. Following that, members of the VFW, American Legion, Town and County officials and the Hampden Historical Society will join us in ringing the Revere Bell.
Another Revere forge bell is located at the Winterport Meeting House. They are opening the Meeting House at 6 p.m., reading Wadsworth’s poem at 6:30 p.m. and their bell will ring at 7 p.m.
Two Lights for Tomorrow is the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission’s kickoff event and honors Paul Revere’s ride on April 18th, 1775. You can learn more at www.america250.org. The famous rides of Paul Revere, William Dawes and others alerting their fellow patriots of the movement of British troops occurred overnight on April 18–19, 1775. A signal – two lanterns in the tower of Christ Church in Boston – indicated that the British regulars were traveling via the Charles River. At its heart, these events are a call to people living in America for two lights to be displayed to remind us all of the importance of coming together and that our history is about working together for a better tomorrow.
