As a mother of two, Laurel Libby’s actions in February were unconscionable to me. Why she felt entitled to harass and out a child is beyond my comprehension.
In her column, “I won’t stop fighting for fairness in girls’ sports,” in the BDN on April 3, Libby expresses extreme distress and injustice over her treatment after her actions in February, yet fails to see that she inflicted those same abuses on a girl. Seems unfair.
Even more confusing is that she can’t acknowledge that how she reacted was wrong and offer an apology. Especially being the mother of five children she should understand the damage these kinds of actions have on a child and their family, and in this case, the whole community when police officers were stationed at the school because of Libby’s outburst. How scary for those children and their families. Again, seems unfair.
As a Maine state representative, Libby has the very distinct privilege of having a voice and a platform to express concerns for the state. Libby could have addressed laws protecting transgender people’s rights at the Maine State House with other adults in a formal settling. It is how she chose to address her opinions that is so disturbing.
I expect more professional behavior from an elected state official, especially when it concerns the welfare of a child. I sincerely hope we as a nation can still agree that all children deserve to be protected and treated with dignity and respect.
