If you’ve already seen The Minecraft Movie — WB’s video game adaptation starring Jack Black that made bank last week, and is sure to make more money this weekend — or you have no intention to watch Jason Momoa bounce around colorful CGI backgrounds, then you may find yourself without any concrete viewing options this weekend.
Well, have no fear, as Watch with Us has three great recommendations for you. All you need is an Amazon Prime subscription and a few hours of free time devoted to watching a thriller with a former Batman actor, a road movie with Magic Mike or one of the sexiest crime movies ever made.
‘Dog’ (2022)
Did you know that Channing Tatum is a film director? The model-dancer-actor added another hyphenate to his resume with 2022’s Dog, a charming road movie he codirected with Reid Carolin. Tatum plays Jackson Briggs, a former U.S. Army Ranger who has to travel from Washington to Arizona to attend the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier, Riley Rodriguez (Eric Urbiztondo). He’s tasked with escorting Riley’s military dog Lulu to say goodbye to her former owner, after which she will be put down.
Dog chronicles Jackson and Lulu’s unlikely road trip, where they meet a variety of fellow travelers, including two amorous women Jackson tries to sleep with, a paranoid marijuana farm owner and another vet who shows him how to train Lulu. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the pair eventually bond, but is it strong enough to overcome Jackson’s PTSD and his aversion to responsibility?

When it was released in February 2022, Dog surprised many by becoming a sleeper hit. The movie’s plot is basic, but it’s told effectively, and Tatum shows some surprising depth as a war veteran still recovering from his time on the battlefield. As Lulu, Belgian Shepherds Britta, Zuza and Lana just might be the best onscreen partners Tatum’s ever had. (Sorry, Rachel McAdams, Sandra Bullock and Amanda Bynes.)

‘Kill Me Again’ (1989)
Val Kilmer recently died on April 1, and pretty much all of his tributes cited his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever and Heat. But the versatile actor excelled in a variety of genres, and the underrated 1989 neo-noir Kill Me Again gave him a chance to showcase his dramatic chops as a man who can’t help falling in love with the wrong woman.
That woman is Fay (Joanne Whalley), who asks Kilmer’s character, Reno private investigator Jack Andrews, to help fake her own death so that she can escape her abusive ex-husband. Burdened with a $10,000 gambling debt and a soft spot for Fay, he agrees — only to discover Fay has disappeared and he’s charged with her fake death. Jack must now clear his name by finding Fay, but the clock is ticking, and the cops – and Fay’s ex — want him either behind bars or dead.
Initially panned when it was released, Kill Me Again is a twisty noir with a plot shaped like a pretzel. Everyone is double-crossing each other, and it’s hard to know who to root for at times. But the film is fun to watch and keeps you guessing, and Kilmer and Whalley have an intense onscreen chemistry that makes you understand why the two were married during filming.

‘Out of Sight’ (1998)
In the cool movie canon, Out of Sight surely ranks near the top. The Steven Soderbergh caper comedy has all the necessary ingredients for a fun, stylish picture: a pair of charismatic stars (George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez) at the height of their ‘90s fame and beauty; a supporting cast full of the best character actors around (Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn, Albert Brooks and a pre-famous Viola Davis); and a story adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel that’s equal parts fun and serious.
Jack Foley (Clooney) is a professional bank robber who is in prison again for stealing from the wrong people. His hasty breakout is witnessed by U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco (Lopez), who is briefly taken prisoner by Jack before escaping. Jack intends to steal some diamonds from a former prisoner who promised him a legit job and then bailed, while Karen wants to capture the man who sparked a romantic connection between the two.
