The head of John Bapst Memorial High School has “stepped down” from his role, four months after unexpectedly leaving the position.

David Armistead left his role as head of school as of Monday, the John Bapst board of trustees said.

“Armistead is stepping down to spend more time with his family and pursue new challenges elsewhere,” the trustees said in the Wednesday statement provided by spokesperson Dan Cashman.

Armistead did not respond to a request for comment.

Armistead had been on leave since Nov. 5, when the school said he was “unavailable for the foreseeable future.” His leave coincided with that of Director of Public Relations Angela Kearns, who is the subject of an independent investigation, the chair of the school’s board of trustees told the Bangor Daily News in November.

There is no additional information to be released about “personnel matters,” Cashman said when asked if Kearns was still on leave.

Kearns’ attorney, Maria Fox, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The interim leadership at John Bapst will stay in place through the end of the academic year. The trustees are discussing what the leadership structure will look like in the future, they said.
