Workers are now tearing down a building at 15 Belmont Ave. in Belfast that most recently served as a coffee and sandwich shop, but that will soon be the site of a new branch of Maine State Credit Union.
The credit union has purchased the property, and its plans for building a new structure on the site were approved by the Planning Board in December. The new location will consist of a two-story, 6,200-square-foot building with an ATM and drive-thru window.
The building being torn down was originally a Pizza Hut and most recently was home to Bell the Cat cafe, which has relocated just down the street to 18 Hatley Road.
As of Friday afternoon, demolition of the building was underway, but no workers were present.
The Augusta-based Maine State Credit Union has at least five other branches, stretching across central and midcoast Maine.
It’s not the only commercial project to recently happen in that part of Belfast. Convenient MD opened an urgent care location across the street at the start of 2024.
