The Federal Bureau of Investigation is apparently investigating the Boothbay-area waste transfer station, according to local officials. Little other information was immediately available about the probe.
Officials confirmed the investigation during a Boothbay Select Board meeting on Wednesday, after a reporter from the Boothbay Register newspaper asked whether the FBI had raided the transfer station of the Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District earlier in the day, according to a video of the meeting.
“I think everybody can confirm it, but nobody knows what’s going on,” a local official said in response to the question.
“There is an ongoing investigation and any information that you would like, you need to speak to the FBI office in Boston,” another official said.
In the video, it was not clear which officials were responding to the questions.
Officials at the transfer station, the Boothbay town office and the FBI office in Boston did not immediately respond to questions on Thursday.
The Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District offers waste disposal for the towns of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb and Southport.
