A fire in a Bangor apartment building on Monday night was stopped quickly thanks to working smoke detectors and attentive neighbors.
The fire at 253 Center St. was reported around 7:30 p.m. by upstairs neighbors, who were alerted by a smoke detector and called 911, Bangor Fire Department Assistant Chief Greg Hodge said.
No one was in the apartment where the fire started, but firefighters rescued a dog from inside, Hodge said. The building has four apartments. Hodge didn’t know the exact number of people in the building at the time of the fire but estimated three.
The cause of the fire will be investigated by the insurance company, Hodge said, adding that nothing was suspicious about it.
Residents of three of the four units were expected to be able to return to their apartments tonight, he said.
“It was called in very early and we got there pretty quick,” Hodge said. “Working smoke detectors made all the difference in this incident.”
