We seem to be living in a time of contrasts. Much of our awareness and knowledge seems to depend on what news sources we use, whether it’s social media, newspapers, TV, etc. Credible polls show that most Americans are worried about their personal and the country’s future.
The country was founded on a balance of powers between the executive, congressional and judiciary. This balance has clearly come under attack as have those who defend the Constitution with its limits on executive authority.
It is interesting to see how different elected officials have responded. Sen. Susan Collins has essentially moved between “concerned,” “very concerned,” and “disappointed.” She is working behind the scenes to make things better, but as chair of the Appropriations Committee, I think she could stand up and do much more.
Gov. Janet Mills is a Mainer through and through and shows she will not be bullied or lied to. Her recent response to President Donald Trump (“See you in court”) is now on signs and t-shirts and many people are proud of her standing up to the attempt at unlimited executive authority. These are challenging times and it’s of some comfort to know she stood up and spoke the truth.
