20 years since its release, Ice Princess remains one of Michelle Trachtenberg‘s most iconic projects of her career.
The late actress skated onto the big screen as Casey Carlyle, a high school student and aspiring figure skater, when Ice Princess hit theaters in March 2005. The film follows Casey as she uses her childhood love of figure skating as the subject of a Harvard University scholarship project.
In addition to helping out other skaters, Casey’s knowledge of physics improved her own performance on the ice, leading her to train under her frenemy Gennifer “Gen” Harwood’s (Hayden Panettiere) mother, Tina (Kim Cattrall). As Casey continues to rise in the figure skating world, she is faced with the difficult choice of pursuing her athletic dreams or choosing the academic path she and her mother (Joan Cusack) had always envisioned for her.
Trachtenberg starred in Ice Princess in between finishing her three-season run on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and before taking on her iconic role as Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl. The actress died at age 39 in February 2025 after being found in her New York City apartment.
Cattrall paid tribute to her late costar via Instagram shortly after news of her death broke. “Rest in peace sweet Michelle 
,” she captioned a pic of the two on the set of Ice Princess.
