Husson University in Bangor is looking for a new head of its athletic department with current director John Sutyak leaving in May to take the same role at the University of Southern Maine, the school announced on Monday.
“The decision to leave is one of the hardest in my professional career,” Sutyak said in a press release. “My family and I have received support and love from the students, the staff and the faculty here at Husson University. The experiences I have had watching our students thrive in the classroom and excel on their respective playing surfaces has been phenomenal.”
Sutyak was hired to lead the Husson Eagles athletic department in 2023. Since that time, Husson teams have won 11 conference championships, eight regular season titles and secured spots in seven NCAA championships, according to the school.
Sutyak will stay on at Husson until May 10. Husson will launch a nation-wide search for his replacement. Husson President Lynne Coy-Ogan said the school will be looking for someone with the “same level of enthusiasm and leadership” that Sutyak demonstrated in the role.
Sutyak has roots in southern Maine. He is a Scarborough High School graduate, his parents live in southern Maine and his wife works in that area as well. The University of Southern Maine has two campuses in Gorham and Portland.
“I am humbled at the opportunity to join this athletic department and work to continue, and elevate, the proud tradition of athletic success at the University of Southern Maine,” he said.
