Another building was destroyed by fire at a controversial former school Friday.
It’s the third fire to happen at the former site of the Elan School in Poland since late November.
Crews were called to the scene at around 11 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting out of the building.
Firefighters from several towns battled the fire. Crews say the windy weather complicated efforts.
“Unfortunately, we’re on top of the lake, so it’s coming straight off the lake, up the hill, really in our face,” Poland Fire Chief Tom Printup said. “There are some properties down the road that are occupied, so we obviously wanted to make sure there are no embers or sparks into those adjacent properties.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Power is cut off to all buildings on the campus.
The school, a private institution for troubled students, closed in 2011, citing financial issues.
Former students have accused staff of emotionally and physically abusing them.
