The View‘s Sunny Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg are rushing to Selena Gomez‘s defense against body-shamers.

During the Tuesday, February 25, episode of The View, both hosts sounded off on a recent Glamour op-ed titled “It’s Okay to Feel Hurt When Celebrities Lose Weight—but Let’s Unpack It.” The article specifically alleged that Gomez’s “visibly slimmer appearance” at the SAG Awards on Sunday, February 23, sparked “a wave of reactions from fans.”

“The sort of cult of celebrity is always interesting to me,” Hostin, 56, shared on Tuesday’s episode about the speculation into Gomez’s appearance. “Like, why look to a complete stranger for inspiration? You don’t know what’s going on in that person’s life.”

Hostin brought up Gomez’s lupus diagnosis as well, adding, “She may have lost this weight for her health condition.” Goldberg, 69, meanwhile, agreed that it was “nobody’s business” when it came to Gomez’s appearance despite her being in the public eye.

“Listen, everybody makes their choice in life,” Goldberg explained, adding that many people “don’t realize” celebrities have their own personal struggles.

Gomez, 32, has yet to address the body-shamers, but she is no stranger to clapping back against criticism. The actress previously explained that her health issues such as lupus, kidney problems and high blood pressure caused her weight to fluctuate.

“I will do a red carpet, I will do whatever. I don’t need to see it, I participated,” she said on a 2019 episode of the “Giving Back Generation” podcast. “I felt wonderful and that’s where the extent of it is. I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say.”

Gomez recalled how the negativity directed at her “really messed” her up, adding, “I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. That got to me big time.”

After undergoing a kidney transplant, Gomez admitted it wasn’t always easy to see the commentary surrounding her body. “Being in the public eye from such an early age certainly comes with a lot of pressure. It’s hard to feel comfortable when you feel like everyone is watching, judging and commenting on the way you look,” she told Glamour UK in February 2022. “Self-confidence is still something I work on daily, but when I stopped trying to conform to society’s unrealistic standards of beauty, my perspective entirely shifted.”

Gomez elaborated on the negative social media comments in a 2023 Dear … docuseries, “I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and say [the negative comments] don’t matter, I’m not accepting what you’re saying — all the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things,” she said at the time.
