A Dedham man was arrested Friday in last year’s shooting at the University of Maine at Augusta campus in Bangor.
Zachary Fossett, 48, was charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault, all felonies, according to Sgt. Jason McAmbley, a spokesperson for the Bangor Police Department.
Fossett and the victim were living out of their cars and staying in a rarely used parking lot on Taft Street at the UMA campus when the shooting happened on Feb. 10, 2024.
Fossett called police just before midnight to say he had shot someone. When police arrived, officers found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to the hospital, McAmbley said Monday morning.
Fossett told officers that he shot the other person in self-defense, according to McAmbley.
He has been indicted by a grand jury. He was being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he was awaiting his first court appearance on these charges on Monday.
