I am definitely opposed to a lighted Bangor sign downtown. People already know they are in Bangor at that point.
There is such a thing as visual pollution when quaint cities such as Bangor become overridden with neon and other types of signage. I have seen the ambiance of beautiful small cities ruined by visual pollution.
A better approach would be to have “Welcome to Bangor” signs at the certain city limits. Perfect examples of more beautiful signage can be found in Clermont, Florida and anyone can Google “Clermont Florida welcome sign” and see aesthetically pleasing welcome signs and some are lit with minimal lighting.
The cost of running and maintaining such a big sign as proposed was not fully mentioned in the proposal. I’m not opposed to promoting Bangor but there are better ways to spend taxpayers money.
