The suspect in a shooting at the Maine Mall on Wednesday has turned himself in to police.
Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, of Westbrook, had been at large since the shooting, which police described as an isolated incident between two people.
The victim, who has not been identified, underwent surgery at Maine Medical Center and was expected to survive, according to police.
South Portland police searched the mall for several hours on Wednesday evening but did not find Awad, who was publicly identified after the search.
Police later learned that Awad wanted to turn himself in to police. South Portland detectives worked with him through a third party, and at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, met him outside the Cumberland County Jail, where they took him into custody without incident, the department said.
Awad was charged with elevated aggravated assault, a class A felony; reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony; and carrying a concealed/threatening display of a weapon (person under 21 years of age), a class D misdemeanor.
Police said they did not recover the gun.
Awad is being held on $100,000 cash bail pending his arraignment, which is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m.
