All American Airlines flights between Maine’s largest airports and Washington, D.C., have been canceled after a deadly crash on Wednesday night.
Three arrivals from Ronald Reagan National Airport to Bangor International Airport and two departures from Bangor to D.C. were canceled Thursday. Another American Airlines flight for Friday morning also was canceled, according to the airport’s website.
The Portland International Jetport on Thursday morning listed four canceled departures and four arrivals for American Airlines flights between there and D.C.
On Wednesday night, an American Airlines flight carrying 60 passengers and four crew members was descending for a routine landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport when a Black Hawk helicopter with three soldiers aboard crossed into its path, The Associated Press reported.
The soldiers were on a training flight.
As of Thursday morning, 28 bodies have been recovered from the area around the Potomac River. Authorities fear that no one has survived. It’s the deadliest plane crash in the U.S. in 24 years.
“We are now at the point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” the AP quoted John Donnelly, the fire chief in the nation’s capital, as saying Thursday morning. “We don’t believe there are any survivors.”
Ronald Reagan Airport was scheduled to reopen at 11 a.m.
