BANGOR — GRAMMY Award-winning electric violist Martha Mooke will be the featured soloist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra for this season’s third Masterworks concert, presented at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 26 at Collins Center for the Arts in Orono. Known for her pioneering work on the 5-string electric viola, Mooke will join the orchestra for a performance of her acclaimed piece “Invisible Hands”, blending innovative sounds with classical orchestral elements.

“The BSO and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce Martha Mooke to our Bangor community. Her work redefines what is possible in orchestral music, and her music resonates on a high spiritual plain, offering something truly extraordinary for our audience.” said Bangor Symphony Orchestra Music Director Lucas Richman.

The program, conducted by Richman, will explore the theme of composers honoring their predecessors, offering audiences a thoughtful and dynamic musical journey. In addition to Mooke’s electrifying performance, the concert will include:

Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel – a beautifully crafted tribute to the style of the Baroque French Keyboard Suite, dedicated to friends Ravel lost during World War I.

Hommage à Mozart by Jacques Ibert – written in 1955 as a tribute to Mozart’s bicentennial of his birth.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter” – a masterpiece of classical form and expression, celebrated as Mozart’s final symphony.

Mooke will also be presenting a workshop for the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras on Thursday, Jan. 23 from 6-7 p.m. at Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School, as well as a Lunch & Learn event at the Versant Power Astronomy Center on the University of Maine Campus in Orono at noon on Friday, Jan. 24.

Tickets for the BSO concert are available at Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s website or by calling the Collins Center Box Office at 207-581-1755.

Tickets for the Lunch & Learn are available by calling the BSO offices at 207-942-5555 ext. 2.

A trailblazer in the world of electric string instruments, Martha Mooke has earned international recognition for her groundbreaking compositions and performances. As a performer and composer, Mooke has collaborated with leading artists across multiple disciplines, from symphony orchestras to contemporary music icons.

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra is one of the nation’s oldest continually operating professional orchestras, dedicated to enhancing the cultural landscape of Bangor, Maine, through exceptional live performances, music education, and community engagement.
