
Southerners from Texas to Florida awoke on Wednesday to an incredibly rare sight: multiple inches of snow.
A rare instance of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain blanketed the region in what meteorologists say is a “once in a lifetime” occurrence. New Orleans’ French Quarter had snow on its famed balconies. Floridians went sledding. In Alabama, the weight of the snow collapsed the dome of the soon-to-be-demolished Mobile Civic Center.
As Mainers, we know a thing or two about snow. We’re professionals. Our southern brethren, however, are not at all accustomed to the white stuff and the havoc it can wreak.
