A Hancock county land trust may gate property where people have traditionally hunted, a Hancock County land trust said on its social media site Wednesday.
The Blue Hill Heritage Trust said the gate would limit vehicle access to the group’s Wallamatogus Mountain property, where people who were target practicing with clay pigeons and recreational hikers clashed on Jan. 16 over use of the property.
The trust allows hunting with permission on most of its land parcels, including the mountain. There also are hiking trails on its lands, including where the target practicing was occurring. The group wants to maintain a balance of mixed-use activities, it said on social media.
But target practicing of any kind is explicitly prohibited on its properties, according to its rules listed on its website.
George Fields, acting director of the land trust, did not return phone calls Wednesday so no further information could be obtained.
The trust encouraged people to report incidents of target practicing to its office at 207-374-5118.
