A man will spend 26 years behind for shooting a deputy in Minot.
Corey Hamel, 43, pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempted murder and will spend 26 years in prison, according to the Sun Journal.
Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance complaint on Woodman Hill Road in Minot in February 2024.
When police got there, officers found a home on fire and started helping people escape.
That’s when authorities say that Hamel opened fire on them from the end of the driveway, hitting Androscoggin County Sgt. Randy Williams in the leg.
Deputies and Mechanic Falls officers then confronted the gunman and took him into custody.
Williams underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his upper right leg and was released later that week.
Hamel has a lengthy criminal record in Maine dating back to 1999. He was also convicted in 2020 for a domestic violence assault.
